Now this is pure excitement from someone who received a Manhattan Fruitier gift:

“I opened the box, saw my fruit basket, screamed, ran around the dining room table and dove for the crystallized ginger. I ATE EVERY BIT in 2 days. But I haven’t eaten the roses because they are too pretty.”

New Space at 2109 Borden Avenue

A sneak peek at our soon-to-be new digs located at 2109 Borden Avenue in Long Island City. We will be moving from our current Manhattan location to our new home in Long Island City, Queens in July. We will be making our signature fruit baskets and gourmet gift baskets as well as providing customer service from this location. The new space is bright and sunny with spectacular views of Brooklyn and Manhattan. We’ll soon be blogging about the connection between Queens, the Newtown Pippin Apple and Newtown Creek!

Rambutan: Super Fruit

The rambutan is native to Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

It is closely related to several other edible tropical fruits including the lychee, longan, and mamoncillo. The word “rambut” in the fruit name ‘rambutan’ is Malay for ‘hairy,’ and this refers to the spiky rind.

The flesh of the rambutan is juicy, milky- white, translucent in color, with a grape-like, gelatinous texture surrounding a central seed with an almond-like taste.

The rambutan is considered a super fruit. This little fruit is abundant with vitamin C and folic acid. The fruit also has small quantities of copper, manganese, calcium and iron. Additionally, you will obtain 4.3% of the daily recommended intake of phosphorus when you have a serving of rambutan.

The fruit has been used in traditional medicine in Asia for hundreds of years as a treatment for diabetes, hypertension and various ailments. Besides nutritional and healing benefits, rambutan also has therapeutic functions. Consuming the fruit can help kill intestinal parasites, while help relieve symptoms of diarrhea.

Darling Baby Booties Are a Hit With New Parents

We carry a couple of baby gift baskets that include not only fruit, but hand crocheted baby booties. Of course we think they are darling, but it is always sweet to see our gifts appreciated in the homes of happy new parents. One of our customers recently emailed us a photo they received after sending our Baby Hamper & cupcakes:

“Hi everyone,

Thank you for the kind messages and the gift basket! We enjoyed the fruit and cupcakes while our girl was trying on her new super cute booties. Miss you all and will see you soon!”

This cheery email brightened our unseasonably cold Spring morning and hope that all of you are staying warm today. Is it snowing in your state today too?

The answer is actually a little bit of both. The kumquats are extra large and the clementines are extra small. We’ve never seen them be this close in size before. What’s next? One-bite grapefruits?

Guess which one is the Sumo?

Sumo oranges have arrived. The name fits this new orange because of its size (it is one of the largest mandarins) and it has a distinctive topknot, like a sumo wrestler’s. The Sumo orange has bumpy skin and is easy to peel. A cross between the mandarin and a California navel orange, it took 30 years to develop in Japan, where it is called Dekopon and highly prized. A recent recipient of a Manhattan Fruitier Thank You Basket had this to say:

“The most scrumptious arrangement, almost too nice to break into … but of course, I have! I have taken the greenery and the heather (how Scottish) and put into a vase to keep…I have already joffled down the plum which was perfect for eating. I have left the rest to be admired and shared with my colleagues, including the little thank you cookies which are adorable. A couple of things are ripe now which is good and some need a smidge more ripening, so it’ll last longer. The chocolate dipped dried fruits though are MINE all MINE.”
